the grand marquis
invited alacartoona to join them on the stage of
the hurricane
for a night of cabaret and jazz. the resulting event can best be described thusly: "alacartoona hit
the home run and the grand marquis ran the bases." the music was hot, the mood was lusty,
the drinks were flowing and the crowd loved it all.
speaking of the crowd, the lovely courtney kern and her even more attractive husband, scott,
made the trek from the southern nether-reaches of kansas city to attend. you can find several
examples of her photography on this very site. also present was the incomparable
roach,
the prophet behind the donkey show.
a brief bit of praise for bryan redmond, saxophonist, lead vocalist and all-around front
man for the grand marquis. his exceptional musicianship, growl-perfect voice and pomade-coifed
beauty aside, if you are at all interested in american music and musicians from the early 20th
century, then you must talk to this man. alacartoona has met few people as well versed or as
intimately engaged with the art of the time than he. it should be noted that he joined alacartoona
on stage twice to lend his horn to both "ladies" and "st. james infirmary blues". ruby returned
the favor during the grand marquis' set, offering her pipes on "if you'se a viper" and
"hand on the plow".
