cup & saucer

this was alacartoona's first performance at the cup & saucer. outside, the night started out bitterly cold and ended in a snow storm. inside, the standing room only crowd warmed themselves with music and gin.

to the delight of everyone in the room, alacartoona chose this night to debut three new songs: "hiding the body", "perpetual gin" and "last train to paris". she also held a sashay contest, rewarding the winner with a kiss and two tickets to a balinese gamelan concert. the evening ended with a lusty rendition of "(today, my dear) i'm yours", with those in the audience still sober enough to sing joining in.

garrett's

alacartoona's final appearance at garrett's corner market in 2003. the cold weather didn't stop her fans from making the trip and they were well rewarded with an evening of song and drink. by the looks of things, several of them got lucky, as well.

downtown gallery

after roaming the crossroads district and performing guerrilla cabaret for the unsuspecting masses, alacartoona proceeded to the downtown gallery and lofts grand opening event. this was the first of the already famous first fridays artwalk afterparties and, as such, was a roaring success.

mike's

this show marked alacartoona's debut at kansas city's bastion of college debauchery, the legendary mike's tavern. she saw a lot of old friends there that night (dave sharek and leo wetheril were both in attendance) and made some new ones, as well. paul burns started the tradition of handing providence a drink at the end of "just a drink or two" and ruby's raucous kicks and spins during "every saint needs a sinner" provided a glimpse of heaven to those lucky enough to be in the front row.

davey's uptown

alacartoona made her triumphant return to davey's uptown on this chilly fall evening. in front of a crowd split evenly between adoring fans and cabaret virgins, she performed an hour's worth of her most famous pieces.

alacartoona has a special fondness for virgins.

the kitchen ran out of food. the bar ran out of vodka and boulevard pale ale. garrett's paid alacartoona twice and gave her a bottle of champagne.

this was alacartoona's first performance at garrett's corner market and what a ride she gave them. her fans filled every table inside and more stood outside and watched her through the windows. management learned that night to schedule more staff for an alacartoona show.

this was also the first appearance of the now famous "tophat and lips" image. did she know what she was starting when she made this flyer? most definitely she did.

pyro room

sharing the bill with kansas city's dbltap, alacartoona threw the pyro room's rock'n'roll crowd for a delicious loop. they weren't expecting her darkly sensuous beauty or her raucous disregard for convention. they certainly weren't expecting to be moved by her sad, sexy music.

they learned quickly.

davey's uptown

sharing the bill with scott easterday's expassionates, alacartoona's stunning debut at davey's uptown was a roaring success. though she brought a number of her own fans along for the ride, the usual davey's crowd was there in force and they were quite unprepared for the experience. many fans of cabaret were born that night.

just off broadway theater

alacartoona made her debut at the just off broadway theater as part of beth byrd's laid back fundraiser. appearing on a bill replete with tap dancers, jazz singers, comedy troupes and a bull whip demonstration, she felt right at home.
